Electrifying Christmas tree 2025

Beitrag von andrewtretiakov »

Hi all,
This year I used our magnificent induction coil that dates back to the 1880s or 1890s to create a little physics Christmas metal tree demo. The pointy tips are necessary to concentrate the charge.
The induction coil is like a step-up transformer and converts the 12 V input to more than 30 000V output. The breakdown voltage of dry air is 30 000V per cm and in the video the sparks are clearly 5 cm long or more. That is 150 000V are generated. A whiff of ozone can also be detected in the surrounding air.

I hope you enjoy it: My next idea is to place some copper chloride and a bit of ethanol in the metal dish and let the sparks ignite the flammable mixture to create green flames. :D

Wow, Ruhmkorff inductors are rarely seen these days. As a child and young teenager, I was fascinated by electromagnetic waves and built numerous spark transmitters and receivers. I used an inverted mains transformer and an electric bell as an interrupter to build a Ruhmkorff inductor. The basic element of the receiver was a coherer, a tube containing two electrodes spaced a short distance apart, with metal filings in the space between them. Back in the days, radio and television were still purely analog, and I'm sure I caused interference within a radius of 1 km or more :yeah: .
Keep up the great work, Andres :) .

Thank you very much Markus for your kind words!
I've also constructed something similar (but much less sophisticated and impressive  ) for one of our open days, using an electric fly swatter as the source of sparks and hence electromagnetic waves and a receiver antenna and coherer (in my case, a plastic cup with aluminium tape on two sides as electrodes and filled with aluminium balls) with an LED in series. With each spark produced by the swatter, the LED would light up, but I had to reset it every time by gently tapping the cup, causing the balls to move slightly.
I don't have a video but I did a similar thing with a piezo electric kitchen lighter (with no butane) and some LED candles:

I can only aspire to be as good as you are, so please continue to share your extraordinary projects! You are a source of inspiration!
Best wishes,
Andres

Just an idea. You could add some neon bulbs as Christmas candles and connect only one lead to the metal tree or hang on some gas filled glass vials (H2, Ne, He, Ar, etc.).

Thank you for the suggestion. I added neon bulbs to the metal tree as decorations and worked like a charm.

Very nice. Now the high-voltage physicist is ready for Christmas. 🎄⚡

Very nice Experiment, Andrew! And the idea to attach neon bulbs ist also great
